AAC Blocks vs Red Bricks: Which Is Better for Your Project?

Both build a wall. They differ in what that wall weighs, how it insulates and how quickly it goes up.

Weight and its effect on the structure

AAC stands for autoclaved aerated concrete: cement, sand, lime and a foaming agent, cured in an autoclave. The result is a block with a density between 450 and 650 kg per cubic metre depending on the section. Clay brick is roughly three to four times heavier for the same volume.

That difference compounds down the building. Lighter walls mean smaller dead loads on beams and columns, and on an existing slab it can be the difference between being able to add a partition and not. On a new frame, reduced dead load can translate into smaller sections in the design.

Strength and where each can be used

Our AAC range runs from 4 N/mm2 in the 75 mm and 100 mm blocks to 5 N/mm2 at 125 mm and 150 mm, and 6 N/mm2 at 200 mm. That is enough for internal partitions, load-bearing internal walls, external walls of low-rise buildings and walls up to G+2 in the heavier sections. Good quality burnt clay brick at similar strengths remains perfectly serviceable, particularly where a hard, impact-resistant face is wanted.

The rule that matters: match the block to the load. A 75 mm block is a partition product; a 200 mm block is a wall product. Substituting one for the other because it was available is how cracks start.

Insulation, acoustics and fire

  • Thermal: AAC conducts heat at around 0.12 W/mK, several times better than dense brick, so west-facing walls stay cooler in summer.
  • Sound: the 100 mm section is rated around 40 dB of acoustic reduction, useful between bedrooms and in hotels or hospitals.
  • Fire: the 150 mm and heavier sections carry up to a four-hour fire rating and are non-combustible, which is why they appear around staircases and shafts.

Speed, finish and water

AAC blocks are large and light, typically 600 mm long, so a wall goes up quickly with fewer joints and less mortar. They are cut with a saw rather than a chisel, which gives straight edges and less breakage. Because the material is porous, the wall wants a proper plaster or a tile-adhesive skim, and external faces need a weather-resistant finish. Brick is more forgiving about being left exposed and takes impact better in areas like service corridors and loading zones.

What this means for your project

For framed buildings, apartment partitions and anything where dead load or heat gain matters, AAC is usually the better engineering answer. For boundary walls, exposed structures and small load-bearing buildings where local masons are working with familiar methods, brick still wins on simplicity. Many projects use both, and that is a perfectly sensible plan.
